The next target
Happy Earth Day!!!
Today I announced Mulch’s next initiative on LinkedIn:
When I moved to New York City, it wasn’t a park or community garden that most helped me most feel connected to nature.
It was planting seeds in the empty tree bed in front of my apartment building.
Something about seeing that spot daily — watching seeds sprout over time and participating in tiny rituals like watering — made it special.
It was low effort, but it helped me find the grounding, levity, and perspective that I'd long missed since moving to the city from Louisiana.
It's why, this Earth Day, I’m proud to announce the next phase of Mulch’s street tree initiative.
In an effort to accelerate the stewardship of our city's urban forest, we’re massively upping our commitment to providing free native seeds to New Yorkers who claim street trees throughout the city — from 1,000 packets (done ✅) to 100,000 packets.
It's a big swing, but having now seen seeds actually establish in beds throughout the city, we're confident that a nature-filled New York is well within reach.
A long road ahead but stoked regardless. More details coming soon.
It’s a lot (and we’re definitely going to need help) — but I’ve been getting pictures from throughout the Mulch community showing seeds actually establishing in tree beds — and all of that has made me more bullish.
Look at EM!!!
More details coming soon — in the short term, the work is roughly:
- An updated map to make it unambiguous who is claiming what tree bed. Will migrate current markers to this new map.
- Mulch stakes for tree beds (currently negotiating bulk discounts) as well as other seed varieties and plants for sale
- More events (hosting a pop up this Saturday at Other People’s Clothes)!
Till next time!
